Starts: Friday, July 12, 2013 at 9:00am

Ethical dilemmas are situation where social workers are confronted by two or more conflicting obligations, which independently would be equally upheld. In an ethical dilemma, acting on one value or duty automatically violates the other one. Ethical dilemmas challenge us to prioritize values, aspects of the code of ethics and applicable regulations. Some areas of competing values may include confidentiality, self-determination, dual-relationships, conflict of interest and best interest of clients. High standards of practice and avoidance of complaints and law suits requires social workers to be able to identify and successfully resolve ethical dilemmas.

In this workshop participants will learn the following:

		Clear definition of ethics.

How to identify an ethical dilemma.

		Steps to resolve ethical dilemmas.

		Template for rank ordering duties.

Appropriate use of supervision and consultation.

		Documentation requirements

Ethical Considerations With Emerging Areas of Practice: Integrating Nontraditional Interventions

Starts: Friday, September 13, 2013 at 9:00am

Duration: This event lasts 0 days, 3 hours, and 0 minutes.

Blurb:

Details:

Everyday social workers receive brochures for seminars and classes on a wide variety of interventions. Some of these are emerging areas of practice and others are existing approaches that are newly being integrated by social workers.

The NASW code requires social workers to "exercise careful judgment and take responsible steps" when "generally recognized standards do not exist with respect to an emerging area of practice" (1.04 C). What the code does not do is clearly define what is meant by" generally recognized standards" or specify how to exercise that judgment. It offers examples of possible "steps" to be taken, but does not delineate exactly how to maximize the benefits of these steps with areas of practice that lack a strong research base or are new ("nontraditional") to social work practice.

To fully comply with the intent of the code and protect the safety of their clients and the profession, practitioners need more specific guidelines. Through lecture, experiential exercises and questions and answers, the workshop will equip participants with the knowledge and ethical thinking skills necessary to successfully comply with the NASW code.

The workshop will cover the following areas:

	1. Sections of the code related to the assessment and integration of interventions that are new to the practitioner and/or the social work profession.

	2. Ethical thinking and ethical decision-making.

	3. Steps to take when considering an intervention that does not have a "generally

	recognized " research base established..

	4. Assessing outcomes with clients when integrating new approaches.

	5. Optimizing supervision and consultation.

	6. Appropriate documentation and informed consent.

Technology has changed social work practice. Services can be offered over the internet, communication occurs on cell phones, through emails, texts and a variety of social networks. HIPPA regulations have impacted the methods of storing and transmitting client records. Many agencies require social workers to keep records electronically.

Technology offers both new opportunities for providing services as well as ethical and clinical challenges. This workshop will address ethical considerations for social workers in assessing the appropriate use of cell phones, texts, emails, distance therapy and social media. Codes of ethics and relevant laws have not kept up with the advances in technology. Special attention will be given to identifying and successfully resolving the multiple dilemmas created by this reality.
