The State of Aging in Chicago’s Black Community: Challenges, Resources, and Opportunities

In honor of Black History Month, the NASW-Illinois Chapter Older Adults Shared Interest Group will be presenting The State of Aging in Chicago’s Black Community: Challenges, Resources, and Opportunities.

All courses offered through the NASW-Illinois Chapter meet the continuing education qualifications for LSWs, LCSWs, LPCs, LCPCs, LMFTs, RNs, LPNs, APNs, and LCPs licensed in Illinois as required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). NASW-IL is also a Illinois State Board of Education-approved licensed professional development provider for PELs (formerly Type 73s) for school social workers.

Speaker Bios:

Robin Tillotson, MSW, is the Southeast Regional Director at the Chicago Department on Aging (CDoA). She is primarily responsible for the oversight of the center located at 1767 E 79th Street. Her duties entail ensuring that programs such as nutrition, fitness/life enrichment, information and assistance are provided to seniors in a comprehensive manner. Prior to working for CDoA, Robin served as director of women’s services at the Harris YWCA and oversaw YWCA’s community education programs within the Chicago Public Schools and community based organizations. Robin also serves as adjunct instructor in the Sociology Department at Chicago State University where she teaches an Aging Seminar to undergraduate and graduate students. Robin received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English Literature from Oberlin College (Ohio), and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Chicago.

Melvin Thompson is the executive director of the Endeleo Institute, the community development arm of Trinity United Church of Christ on the Far South Side of Chicago. Mr. Thompson is charged with the successful integration of three former nonprofit corporations in Health, Education and Community Development. Under his leadership, Endeleo (the Swahili word for progress, growth and development) addresses a pressing need to advance the state of comprehensive community development with deeper effectiveness, due largely to its evolution beyond single issue, project-based strategies that fail to address the complex mix of challenges African-Americans face. As such, Endeleo is committed to community-based participatory research, acting as community liaison between academic research institutions and the Washington Heights community it serves.
