Strengthening and Enhancing Agents of Change: Male Roles in Families, Communities, and Civil Society - The Case for Black Males

This workshop will draw upon theoretical and conceptual frameworks and empirical findings from the Chicago Parenting Initiative Evaluation Study, Fathers and Sons Chicago Study, and the Father-Son Communication Study to build an empirical-based social work policy and intervention practice framework for engaging black males in families, communities, and civil society. Discussion will focus on how these frameworks and findings support evidence-based social work policy and intervention practice. 

Attended in full, this workshop fulfills cultural competency requirements for licensure renewal. All courses offered through the NASW-Illinois Chapter meet the continuing education qualifications for LSWs, LCSWs, LPCs, LCPCs, LMFTs, RNs, LPNs, APNs, and LCPs licensed in Illinois as required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

Speaker: Waldo E. Johnson, Jr., PhD, MSW, is associate professor at The University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration where he examines social and environmental factors and contexts on urban Black males’ developmental, physical, and mental health statuses, social role identities' assumption, and performance across the life course. He is co-investigator of the Fathers and Sons Chicago Study, co-principal investigator of the Father-Son Communication Study, and senior consultant for the Mathmatica Policy Research PACT Study.
