"Serving on the NASW-Illinois Chapter Board of Directors is a unique opportunity that enables social workers to network with social work leaders and members around the state, and at the same build up one’s list of contacts as well as advance one’s own professional standing. Serving on the NASWIllinois Board of Directors also brings visibility and exposure to your organization and/or practice. A board position also helps develop and apply one’s leadership skills and make a difference by being involved in advocacy efforts that impact social workers statewide. I encourage members to learn more about how a potential leadership position in your professional association can enhance your own professional standing as well as the status of the social work profession." —Joel L. Rubin, MSW, CAE, NASW-Illinois Chapter Executive Director

"Serving on the board provides me the opportunity to advocate for our profession and the people we serve, as well as shape the public's understanding of the wide range of services social workers deliver. The networking, leadership, and education gained through serving allows me the chance to advance the service I provide at a micro, mezzo, and macro level." —Mary Gollings, NASW-Illinois Chapter President

"Not only have I gained more knowledge regarding the issues and concerns of social workers within the state of Illinois, but I have developed additional resources, gained new friendships, and expanded my networks. Serving on the board has afforded me the opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills in the areas of advocacy and legislation, thus connecting the work of the NASW Illinois Chapter to the work that is being done in the field.—Chasity Wells-Armstrong, Former Board Member

"As a member of NASW, I wanted a deeper understanding as to how the association operated as well as how they play an integral role in the social work profession. As a board member I have gained a wealth of knowledge about this profession, a stronger understanding of the importance of the association, and best of all, I have been able to meet many amazing social workers along the way."Kenna Dunlap Johnson, East Central District Chair

"As a board member, I've had the pleasure of learning more about the role NASW plays in advocating not just for the profession, but for the clients we serve and agencies we are employed with. It is exciting to be supporting these efforts and learning about what a difference social workers are making all over the state of Illinois."Christine Escobar-Sawicki, Calumet District Chair

"Serving as a board member has given me the opportunity to work closely with chapter leadership and contribute to the social work profession. I’ve had a chance to connect with a greater number of colleagues that have been very generous with sharing their concerns as well as ideas to continue having a vigorous organization and seasoned professionals." —Grisel Rodriguez-Morales, Former Board Member

"As an NASW-Illinois Chapter Board Member, I have been fortunate enough to connect with colleagues that I would otherwise not have had the opportunity to meet, thus expanding my personal and professional community. My experience as a board member has provided me with the experience to continue to grow and learn as a professional social worker and make a difference." —Mary Garrison, Former Board Member

"Being an NASW-Illinois Chapter Board Member has provided me with a unique opportunity to be part of the decision-making process in a profession that is in constant evolution. It has also allowed me to be instrinsically involved with what matters to our constituency and to make a difference. Furthermore, this involvement has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people in the field and enhance my professional growth." —Monica Guilhot-Chartrand, Former Board Member

"I joined the board not knowing what to expect. I thought, “What business do I have sitting at the decision-making table? I’m just a student.” Yet my board experience has been eye-opening. The conversations are dynamic and the issues pressing. Being both surrounded by and associated with professional social workers passionately advocating for clients and fellow social workers on the local, state, and national levels has made me feel connected to the social work profession like never before." —Taha Zaffar, Former Undergraduate Student Representative
