From the Pen of the Executive Director: January 2019

Happy new year to the Illinois social work community!

Many of us spent the past couple of weeks celebrating and relaxing with friends and family, and also reflecting on the past year and looking forward to 2019. I did the same, as well as celebrating a big birthday— the big 6-0. As a close friend of mine noted, “It’s only a number.” While I am in that reflective mode, I thought I would look back at my inaugural, “From the Pen of the Executive Director” article for what used to be our print newsletter, the Networker, at the start of 2000.

In that article I discussed my first trip on behalf of the chapter to Springfield, meeting with our former manager of legislative affairs, the late Sandy Mills.

This current trip is the first of several I will be making to the various districts in order to hear your views and expectations of the Chapter. The Chapter belongs to its membership and your input is essential to effectively carry' out the Chapter mission. Moreover, my trip to Springfield made it very clear that one of the most important functions of the Chapter is to advocate on behalf of the profession to improve the quality of life for all citizens of Illinois. I encourage all of you to become more active. If we aren't at the table, we simply won’t get noticed.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. 2019 will be no different. I, together with NASW-Illinois Chapter President Mary Gollings, will be traveling around the state to hear your views and expectations. There continue to be a range of ways to become more active in the chapter, including the following:

There are also some new member benefits initiated in 2018 to also take advantage of:

Much is currently being planned for your professional needs during 2019. Stay tuned to our bimonthly e-mails.

Starting the new year, it is always important to acknowledge the tireless efforts of our board leadership, as well as the staff of the NASW-Illinois Chapter: Kyle Hillman, Director, Legislative Affairs and Meetings Management, and Nina Nguyen, Manager, Communications and Membership. Both help carry out the many activities of the chapter.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments and suggestions either by e-mail, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or by phone at (312) 435-2100 ext. 700. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes for 2019!
