January 2019 - Three Rivers Update

Mary Abbott, LCSW

Happy 2019!

Hoping your new year if off to a great start! I typically do not do resolutions but as always I will strive to be a better person than I was last year.

I have finalized my next event for March. It will be a cultural competency offering.

Date: March 15, 2018

Time: 9:00-12:00

Address: Association for Individual Development - Elgin Office  1135 Bowes Rd, Elgin, IL 60123

Presenter : Dolly Mandrelle LCSW

Title of presentation: Culturally Sensitive Social Work Practices with Asian Indian Clients in Mental Health Settings.

Summary of presentation: The common myth of the “Model Minority” suggests that Asian Indians minorities do not experience problems associated with the general population such as financial instability, social-emotional disorders, school-related behavior problems, career difficulties, and family dysfunctions. On the surface, Asian Indians might appear to be highly successful, academically oriented, career goal motivated, and the perfect student. However, recent research indicates that this population is not immune to challenges in their personal, social and professional life. This presentation is focused on the unique characteristics within the Asian Indian population which every clinician, social worker, and educator should be aware of to effectively support our clients.

Here is the calendar and registration link. There is fee of $45 for NASW members and $75 for non-members .

I would like to plan an event in May so any feedback regarding topic or venue would be apprecaited !
