November 2018 - West Central District Update

Laura Hepp Kessel

This is my first district update as the newly appointed West Central District Chair! I am honored and excited to fill the last year of our previous chair’s term. I’ll tell you a little bit about myself and my unique experiences as a social worker. I currently live in Canton (Fulton County) but grew up in southern Illinois. I work for the SIU School of Medicine as assistant director (western region) in the Office of Regional Programs. I am involved in a number of outreach activities and initiatives both on our Springfield campus as well as in the twenty-county region I serve. My current role allows me to work with hospitals, health departments, educational institutions, and many others to focus on community health issues. My past work experiences include working for the Illinois State Board of Education (reviewing grants and contracts), former Lt. Governor Sheila Simon (focused on rural affairs policy and issues), and as a community organizer in southern Illinois.

I look forward to getting to know NASW members in the West Central District and hope you’ll consider joining me at future events!  On Friday, December 7, join us in Canton for a networking lunch and CEU panel focused on non-traditional social work roles. Register here for the December 7th event. I hope to see you at this upcoming event!
