Social Work Licensure Renewal Bill Passes in IL House

Despite national efforts from outside groups to de-license professions, the NASW-Illinios Chapter is excited to announce that the Social Work Licensure Renewal bill passed the Illinois House today and is almost on the governor's desk.

A couple of notable changes:

  1. Allows for the department to collect e-mails to modernize communication.
  2. Allows for licensed social workers (LSWs) to work directly under licensed marraige and family therapists (LMFTs) and licensed clinical professional counselors (LCPCs)—a practice that goes on today but is currently against our practice act.
  3. Allows the department to modernize the application for licensure process by moving to online forms and simplifying the entire process. (This is an issue the NASW-Illinois Chapter has been working on with the department to accomplish.)
  4. Extends the Social Work Licensure Act until 2028.
  5. Requires that social work graduates working toward their LSW/LCSW be identified as a "social worker in training" status. (Official term will be determined in rules in the future).
  6. Requires (in the act) that social workers be mandated reporters for abused or neglected adults.

Congrats on another ten years of licensure in Illinois!
