HIPAA Series
Introduction
The Legal Defense Fund has provided NASW members with a wealth of information on its webpage about the Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act’s (HIPAA) regulations in context with social work practice and the NASW Code of Ethics. In January 2015, the HIPAA webpage was reorganized to be more user friendly so that information about specific HIPAA regulations can be easily researched. Members can access this newly organized and enhanced HIPAA webpage at: Socialworkers.org/HIPAA
The attached set of four separate Legal Issue of the Month articles (covering July-November 2014), while issued as separate articles, are all related to HIPAA. They form a four-part series that provides an overview of the HIPAA regulations. Part I reviews the Privacy Rule; Part II addresses the Security Rule; Part III focuses on the Breach Notification and Security Rules; and Part IV includes the NASW HIPAA Toolkit. The Toolkit contains relevant HIPAA forms and policies that pertain to each rule and can be used by members as examples to be modified for their practices. We trust that this presentation will provide ready access to HIPAA information and legal requirements that will be of service to NASW members.
