NASW-IL PAC Endorsements

Writer's picture: NASW-IL Staff NASW-IL Staff

This year we are excited to have 4 social workers/social work graduates running for seats in the Illinois General Assembly. We also have some of our biggest champions and advocates of our agenda facing tough fights. We need you to make sure you are registered to vote, volunteering for candidates, and voting to keep our endorsed candidates in office.

The National Association of Social Workers Illinois Chapter Political Action Committee (NASW-IL PAC) is the nonpartisan political arm of the NASW-Illinois Chapter. It endorses and financially contributes to state and local candidates from any party who support the chapter’s political agenda. The 2020 NASW-IL PAC endorsements for contested races are as follows:

Karina Villa for 25th Senate District:Rep. Villa is an NASW-IL member and school social worker who has been a strong advocate for our issues. Born and raised in West Chicago, Illinois, Karina is a lifelong resident of Illinois’ 25th senate district. On November 6, 2018, she was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives for the 49th district. Throughout the 101st General Assembly, Karina has repeatedly demonstrated her passion as an advocate for students and families, furthering her strong record of service to the community. Karina earned a master’s degree in social work from Aurora University.

Lindsey LaPointe for 19th District State Rep.:Representative Lindsey LaPointe is an NASW-IL member and graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago Jane Addams College of Social Work. Previously, Lindsey worked with children with special needs, adults with disabilities, and seniors in need of help. As a policy advocate, Lindsey worked for eight years to find smarter ways to approach crime, saving taxpayers money and making our communities safer.

Republican Candidate Jackie Haas, LCSW, vs. Democratic Candidate Charlene Eads for 79th District State Rep.: In this race we have an LCSW running against a candidate who graduated from a social work program. The PAC elected not to endorse in this race but rather encourage our members to review both candidates and support whomever best aligns with your priorities.

Fair Tax Constitutional Amendment: Vote Yes. It is critical for the issues we support and the mental health profession in Illinois that we pass a constitutional amendment allowing the state to move to a progressive income tax. It is time the wealthy in our state pay their fair share while we reduce the burden on those already struggling.

Cook County State's Attorney: Kim Foxx. Special interests continue to push for a return to being tough on crime rather than continuing on Kim Foxx's transformative approach to being smart on crime. Now is not the time to reverse course, and we strongly encourage you to vote for Kim Foxx for Cook County State's Attorney.
