The Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has revised the Social Work Rules webpages to align with recent changes in Illinois law and approved amendments to the Illinois Administrative Code. You can access the updated pages here.
KEY POINTS:
Purpose of Social Work Rules:
These rules are part of the Administrative Code and serve to clarify for you the Social Work Practice Act and other relevant legislation.
In cases of conflict between the Practice Act and the Social Work Rules, the Practice Act takes precedence.
For any uncertainties, contact the department for written clarification via letter or email. Given the broad range of professions handled by IDFPR, obtaining written confirmation ensures accurate and reliable information related specifically to your license which is not always given via the call center. It will also serve as documentation in the event of a disciplinary inquiry from the department.
Specialty CEUs Update:
Recent updates have been made to the rules regarding specialty Continuing Education Units (CEUs) under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130 Subpart E. The updated document can be found here.
Notably, the Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias training requirement has been clarified that along with once every 6 years, it will now be mandatory for your first renewal where CEUs are required (i.e., your second renewal for most social workers), rather than your first renewal.
Our CEU Requirements page has been updated to reflect this clarification.
Note: Not all CEU requirements for social workers are listed in 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130 Subpart E. To see the full list, you need to review both the Social Work Rules and the specialty CEU section. Our CEU Requirements page provides a comprehensive overview of all current current continuing education requirements for Illinois social work licenses.
Cultural Competency Requirement:
The new rules also provide guidance on the recently introduced cultural competency requirement for various other professions. However, social workers are not required to take any additional steps as their existing requirements already exceed this new mandate.
